How does privacy window film turn clear glass into a reflective surface that provides the privacy of a wall on one side, while letting an indoor resident view their exterior with perfect clarity?

Privacy window film works by playing with the reflective properties of light. Sunlight which is naturally present outdoors is brighter than indoor artificial  lighting. For these reasons, reflective window film provides fantastic privacy during the day, whether its a sunny or cloudy day.

No. Many people wonder why we never recommend window film to be purchased at a hardware store and self-installed. Read below for our detailed reasons why window film installation is not a good DIY project.

Jagged Edges. Many people are unaware that as a building settles, most windows and other glass panes are not square within the frame, so even if window film is cut perfectly to size, adjustments (cutting) will need to be made after installation (due to the glass frames often being out of square). A professional installation ensures no jagged edges, and only smooth, clean cuts.

Faded dyes. Poorly produced window films that can be purchased at a big box store or hardware store will often be advertised as “easy install.” However, the true cost of these film lies in their short shelf life. Window film is more cheaply produced when dyes are used for the coloring and “sun blocking.” Dyes and coloring naturally fade in the sun over time, leaving large sun spots on otherwise beautiful window panes. Cheap window films have to be replaced constantly due to this fading issue, as well as provide less sun protection while in use. Don’t buy cheap window films that will cost you more in the long run. Invest in high quality window film from a trusted company like Luxury Window Films, which use splattered aluminum, gold and other precious metals to provide the coloring, as well as the sought-after solar and UV protection. A high quality window film will never fade.

Bubbles and wrinkles. As anyone who has tried first-time installation can attest, a DIY job looks DIY. Bubbles, wrinkles, pulling, cloudiness and jagged edges are all to common with the first few projects of a novice installer. If incorrect tools and knives are used, there is also a risk that the glass could be cut or the wooden framing could be damaged. Choose a professional window film installation company to ensure your glass remains undamaged and continues to look high-end. Our high-quality tools imported from Europe will never cut, scrape, or otherwise damage glass.

Another consideration with cheap window films bought at a hardware store is the quality of the material itself. Does it matter in terms of the heat rejection, UV protection and longevity of the product? Yes.

A common way to produce window film cheaply is to use dye (coloring) to produce the various common colors of window films. These cheaply produced dyes naturally fade in the sun over time, leaving darker and lighter spots on your windows, and leaving an overall cheap and ugly appearance on your glass. The lack of longevity costs you more in the long run, as these cheaply produced films have to be replaced frequently and it is labor-intensive to remove window film, especially cheap window film.

On the other hand, high quality window films do not obtain their coloring from dyes. Rather, high-quality window films obtain their hues and reflectivity from specially-treated metallic particles spluttered into the window film. These fine metals never fade, and provide rich hues that last as long as the earth itself, and provide protective UV-reflecting particles that protect hardwood floors from fading, protect precious art, leather furniture and your skin.
