Invisible glass can present a threat to birds if the glass is in their path of flight! Frost window film gives glass an opaque look, helping birds avoid head-on collisions. 

Frosted glass still allows plenty of natural light to filter into a room, giving privacy without darkening a room.

"WhY Don't You recommend D.I.Y. options, like tempera paint or soap?"

The short answer is we believe there are more elegant and permanent approaches to preventing bird injuries and deaths that the “DIY / affordable tutorial” methods often found online.

Why we don't recommend tempera paint or soap

Some online sources, such as the World Birds Organization, recommend applying tempera paint or soap to glass in order to create a visible soapy film which blocks light, and therefore may block birds. However, even with this option, the soap will have to be applied “several times a week” in order to maintain this visible “film”.

Are Windows really the biggest threat to birds?

Absolutely not! “Around the world, cats have been singularly blamed for the extinction of more than 60 species” explains Capital Daily News, a local news site for Victoria, BC. Capital Daily goes further to cite that “the biggest single cause of bird death — bigger than hunting, window strikes or even wind turbines — is the housecat.” […] As Victoria’s experience shows, if we want to save the birds we might have to start thinking hard about locking up our cats. ” 

Surprising, right? Helping our local bird community might be as simple as keeping our cats indoors!

Are there any other window film solutions other than frost?"

While we recommend frosted window film as the most effective option to prevent bird collisions, we understand that obstructing your view with frost window film is not suitable for every situation and/or window. 

Recent studies have pointed to clear, UV reflecting window film as being a suitable alternative for deterring bird and preventing bird deaths. Birds can see UV rays, and the UV reflecting properties of UV window film are visible to birds.

While scientific studies have a hard time duplicating the unique, natural circumstances found at each home or commercial building, there is some evidence that birds avoid and often slow down when approaching UV-reflecting window film.
